All routes on this site are supplied by qualified driving instructors who cover that specific test centre. The app has been built and refined over more than five years, with every route driven, tested, and checked before being released. We do not use AI or automated route generation like alternative apps on the market — each route is based on real driving test experience. This means you’re practising on roads that are genuinely used during tests, not guessed or computer-generated routes.

2 Ways to access the New Zealand Driving Test Routes
You can access the test routes in two ways. With the email download option, you’ll receive route maps and written directions that an accompanying driver can read out to you while you practise — just like the tester will do on the day of your test. This lets you focus fully on your driving without watching a screen. The GPS app option provides turn-by-turn navigation on your phone while you drive, helping you learn the route layout and practise the test in real time.

Does Waka Kotahi NZTA publish official driving test routes?
No, NZTA does not release official maps. Our routes are exclusively created using feedback from local driving instructors to provide the most accurate representation of the actual test paths used at all 68 New Zealand centres.
Can I follow the driving test routes using GPS?
Yes. With the New Zealand Test Routes App (available on Android & iOS), you get real-time, turn-by-turn GPS navigation to guide you through the exact test roads, speed zones, and manoeuvres for your local test centre.
How accurate are the New Zealand Test Routes?
Our Driving Test Routes are reviewed and updated every month. They are supplied by local driving instructors who know once any new route is taken. Unlike alternative apps we do not use AI, only genuine routes supplied by actual driving instructors (and some testers).
Types of New Zealand Driving Tests
There are 2 types of practical driving test in New Zealand – Restricted and Full
Restricted Driving Test
- Approx. 60 Minutes
- 10–15 km Distance
The restricted test checks your basic driving skills in everyday conditions. It covers junctions like T-intersections, roundabouts, and traffic lights. You will need to demonstrate specific manoeuvres like parallel parking and three-point turns while maintaining safe following distances and correct lane positioning.
Full Driving Test
- Approx. 30 Minutes
- Approx. 10 km Distance
The full licence test is for those who have held a restricted licence for the required period. It assesses advanced skills, hazard perception, and safe decision-making in complex environments like multi-lane roads. It is more challenging than the restricted test and requires high confidence.
